Basics of Floral Design
There are four components, form, line, color, and texture that are necessary for all floral arrangements to be attractive pieces of work. Without all four of these components your floral arrangement will obviously appear to be lacking something.
Lines in floral arrangements do not have to be straight or continuous. They simply create a pattern for the eye to follow. They can be curved, horizontal, diagonal, or zigzag. It may be necessary to wire an S-curve so that the flowers stay in the proper form. The zigzag patter causes the eye to move back and forth from the arrangement’s center line. Smaller flowers should be used near the top. Diagonal lines move at 45 degree angles from the horizontal and vertical lines.
Squares, triangles, and circles are three basic forms that are used, and they can have only one side or your flower arrangement can go all the way around. The square is not commonly used in arrangements because its shape has not movement. The circle has the most appealing movement and it is used quite often. Another variation of the circle, an oval, can also be used for floral designs. A crescent is part of a circle that gives the arrangement grace and beauty. However, the triangle is the form most used in flower arrangements. It is versatile because it can be used symmetrically or asymmetrically. It is not unusual to see forms that are made in the shape of a cross or some other object, especially for funeral flower arrangements. Often the form is in a shape that reflects something about the person it is intended for. Maybe the person was a fan of racing; someone might order a flower for him that is in the shape of a car.
The physical and visual elements of your floral arrangement make up the texture. It is commonly used to appeal to one gender or another. Men prefer rough textures like wood, and women like a texture that is softer. Texture is necessary to make the arrangement interesting, but too much texture will make the design be unbalanced. It will look like a big mess that was just thrown together if it is unbalanced.
The most important component of any floral arrangement may be the color. People have various responses to different colors. Greens and blues make us feel happy and relaxed, but brighter colors like bright red and yellow can make us feel excited. Color is the reflection of light. Without light, we cannot see color. An object that absorbs all colors appears black, and an object that reflects all colors appears white. You will be able to create colorful designs that are in harmony if you are familiar with the color wheel. The color of floral designs is usually made appropriate for the season. Spring arrangements will usually have pastels and bright pink, yellow, and blue flowers. Fall flowers will have more burnt orange, browns, and burgundy.
Paying close attention to these four components will ensure that your floral arrangement is an object of beauty, and it will be appealing to the eye.
